When Did Tipping Get So Out of Hand?

(Worldwide): a gratuity (a voluntary additional payment made for services rendered)
A VOLUNTARY ADDITIONAL PAYMENT MADE FOR SERVICES RENDRED...you don't say?

Last month when Cody and I went “On Holiday” we took our K-9 children to the “Puppy Spa Retreat” a/k/a the Kennel. We have done this many times. Pretty much anytime we travel we board them.
This is a wonderful service that I’m very happy, pleased, and thankful that someone provides. Therefore I do not turn my nose up or even make a face at the price they charge to have this convenient service.
Now…let me just state the facts…I know that these people do the following for my K-9 Children…
1. They are fed and watered twice a day
2. They are taken outside for a short walk and to potty 2 – 3 times per day
THESE ARE THE ONLY THINGS THEY ARE REQUIRED TO DO!

And again, I do not dispute the price they charge which ends up averaging about $53.00 per day
So even when I am gone for 2 weeks and have to pay $742.00 to leave them and someone feed and walk them…this is my choice and I’m okay to do so…BUT…when they all but ask for a tip and they want to start posting signs all over their facility stating they are happy to accept any tips I can’t help but be a little taken back, because it is now EXPECTED! I understand I am expected to pay the bill for the services I freely signed up for, but on top of that I am expected to give a 15% – 20% TIP of the total cost of my bill. That is about $12.00 and I know it’s just $12.00 and it does not seem like much after you just spent $742.00 for very simple services, to be EXPECTED to give ANOTHER $12.00 is just RUDE to me!
And this is just one place to name a few…don’t get me started about the Starbucks brats…
In closure, I just want to state: I am not a cheap person. I worked for many years in the”service” industry and I pretty much worked for TIPS ONLY. I understand fully. BUT, to be expected everywhere you go to give these large tips to everyone that does any little thing for you is just a bit much to me. When you work at Starbucks your JOB is to make MY Chi Latte that is what I pay $3.35 for, so please do not look at me and assume I WANT to give you a $5 dollar bill and WANT you to Keep the rest of the $1.65 for your service to stick a cup under a machine that pours liquid into it and set in on the counter for me to pick up! That is about a 50% tip! And I like to give the Starbucks brats a 50% tip sometimes, but I don’t like that it is expected of me!...When did it get so out of hand?
